Lipstick Cake

Hope everyone had a great Labor Day Weekend! Three of my college friends came out to visit from NYC and DC and we went glamping down in Moab! ie, camping but inside a canvas tent with real beds and running water. It was so much fun, we went here and I would highly recommend it--the people who work there are so nice! They set up a fire for you and provide s'mores supplies as well! Which is great because the four of us trying to start a fire would have been a literal disaster... We did a couple hikes including Delicate Arch. My parents took us to every national park in Utah as kids, but it had been a long time since I had been to Moab. I forgot how awesome it is to go around the corner and see this gigantic arch just sitting there.

To welcome the gals to Utah I made funfetti cake with buttercream and my favorite chocolate chip cookies. I went through a couple different brainstorming ideas about how to decorate the cake, but decided to go with this lipstick-inspired one--I wanted it to look like you took a bunch of lipsticks and just drew them all over the cake. Whenever I go to Sephora I always walk out with my hands covered in tons of lipstick smears like below, and I thought it would be cool to try it on a cake.

To make the design I used orange, pink, red, peach, and magenta food gels. I took a bunch of little bowls and added 2 teaspoons of water to each, and then added the colors and stirred. You want them to be super pigmented! The frosting is butter based and trying to paint the colored water onto it can be an oil-in-water problem, so making them more pigmented helps. Use a new paintbrush and test out the color on a paper towel first before painting it on the cake. I like it to look a little free-style and not too perfect, with different lines going different ways.

To make this bunting banner I took 2 coffee stirrers I had swiped from Starbucks and tied a small piece of embroidery floss between them. I cut out little triangles of white paper and glued them onto the floss.
